Conclusion
68% of all Google searches now end without a click — Google answers the question itself via a snippet, knowledge panel or AI Overview. That is a jump of 7.5 percentage points compared to 2024 (60.45%) and the fastest acceleration in ten years. For brands this means: a high ranking delivers less and less traffic. The real value is shifting towards being cited in the answer — whether that answer comes from a Google AI Overview or from ChatGPT. Brands that only track clicks will see their ROI per ranking position evaporate.

What zero-click search is
Searches where the user clicks no link because the answer is already visible in the results. Caused by featured snippets, knowledge panels, AI Overviews and direct answers in the search bar.
Why AI is accelerating this
Generative AI search engines are intrinsically zero-click: they give the answer, not a list. Google follows with AI Overviews, which now appear in more than 20% of all searches and reduce click-through rates by nearly 60% compared to results without an AI Overview. Both movements divert traffic away from organic links — even top rankings.
What remains as value
Two things: brand mention (being named in the answer) and direct consideration (the customer sees your brand and actively looks you up). Both require AI systems to recognise your brand as an authority on the topic.
